Autumn Wine festivals

Tradition of wine making in Serbia and region dates back to pre-Roman times. During the Roman expansion on Balkan peninsula, area of today’s Serbia was recognized as one of the most prominent enological regions in Roman Empire. Serbian endemic wine sorts date back to Medieval Serbian kingdom, when Serbian Orthodox monasteries produced wines which were served on most prestigious events all over European Royal courts.

Modern Serbia has 6 major wine regions, all of them distinguished by wine breeding and making style. Hence we have 3 regions in Vojvodina, Northern part of Serbia – Palić Lake region, Vršac region and region of Mt. Fruška Gora; Negotin wine region in East Serbia; Oplenac region in Northern Central Serbia and Župa region in Southern Central Serbia.

Moreover, wine making and enjoying tradition in Serbia is celebrated during the autumn, when the grapes are being picked and prepared for a hard and demanding process of making this divine drink. We are proud to present you 4 major Autumn wine festivals in Serbia:

Smederevska jesen (Smederevo Autumn)
06.09. – 29.09.2013.
Starting in 1899. when first organized exhibition of grapes, wines and fruits was made, Smederevska jesen opens the season of wine festivals. Lasting for almost a whole month, Smederevska jesen turns into an enjoyable gourmet vacation for all the connoisseurs.

Župska berba (Župa Vintage)
19.09. – 22.09.2013.
50th Župska berba in town of Aleksandrovac has a very strong tradition, being the heart of Medieval royal vineyards. In 4 days, hundreds of wineries will participate in contest for the best wines. Moreover, the hallmark of Aleksandrovac – the Grape Fountain – will be filled with the wine made from Serbian grape sort – Prokupac.

Vršački Dani Berbe Groždja (Vršac Grape Gathering Days)
20.09. – 22.09.2013.
Once the largest-scale gathering in Northeast Serbia, on the land of largest wine community in the region – Town of Vršac is very proud of its vineyards and Festival tradition lasting over 60 years. It’s main symbol –the vineyards of Vršac – are open for all the good-willing guests, who are eager to try some of the best wines of Banat County.

Karlovački Groždjenbal (Grapeball of Karlovci)
End of September
Small town of Sremski Karlovci, settled between Mt. Fruška Gora and Danube river, are very proud of their wine and honey making tradition. Outstanding feast is being prepared every year, and over 100.000 guests (15 times the number of citizens!!!) accedes in celebrating the fruits of hard labor in making wine.

Oplenačka berba (Vintage of Oplenac)
11.10. – 13.10.2013.
First capital of liberated Serbia and a cornerstone of Karadjordjevic Royal Family, town of Topola on Oplenac Hill closes the season of wine festivals. However, with around 200.000 guests, over 35.000 liters of wine being sold, followed with concerts and exhibitions and moreover – commemorating the last King of Yugoslavia, King Aleksandar I Karadjordjevic, Vintage of Oplenac stands as a crown jewel in Serbian wine making tradition.
